Fate in the Lottery

People tend to dream to be a millionaire or even much, to be a billionaire by buying tickets in the lottery and hoping they'll get the exact number combination that will be drawn every night. It's not bad to buy tickets in the lottery, the bad effect is being badly obsessed and dependent on its capacity to make people rich. Buying ticket everyday would make a bigger chance for someone to get the jackpot prize, or even get some of the number combination for few consolation prize ranging from a couple of thousands and up. But little do they know that they are spending much than what they could win. For example, here in the Philippines, a price for a 6/49 ticket costs Php 20.00, if one will buy a Php 20.00 ticket everyday ( Php 20 x 365 days) the total will be Php 7,300.00 annually and if he continues to spent buying tickets for the next ten years ( Php  7, 300 x 10 years = Php 73, 000 ) a huge money that can be used for basic necessities or to invest in a business.

Only few people are fortunate to win the jackpot prize in the lottery. Some of them spent and invest it wisely, but unfortunately, not all of them have the same fate. Some winner become so desperate that instead of using money to earn more income, they spent it in luxurious things such as cars, appliances, gadgets and clothes.

Example of this situation is from Callie Rogers, she won $3 million in the UK lottery and she spent it on expensive vacation, breast improvement and other luxurious things. After six years, she found herself working as a main to pay her debts induced by her spending. For more stories about them, visit 10 people who won the lottery and lost it all.

Depending fate in the lottery lure one's point of view in being rich. Being rich is not having all the things you want and getting luxurious things in your closet. Being rich is a lifestyle of saving money in early stages of life, being independent from temptation of borrowing money and securing safety investments such as life insurance for future retirement is more rewarding than winning a bucket of millions.

Lottery's main purpose is to generate revenue for government fund that will finance projects and programs for the benefit of its community. It is also promote as an alternative for games that are not paying tax such as "jueteng" here in the Philippines which corrupts people's money.

Mahal naming anak,

The Doctor that keeps an apple a day. .

Batanes is a very far destination to practice medical profession and requires dedication but unfortunately receive low salary to support living. Others may see it illogical but not to a doctor I've met at our town in uyugan, whose dedication and service he gave is not just because of his salary but for his fulfillment and love for people. His name is Dr. Richard Lariosa, from the province of Isabela. He finished his profession in Ateneo and practice as a Barrio Doctor in Tagapul-an,Samar in 2002 which he then sent to Uyugan by the Barrio Leaders for Health Program. His father is been a doctor also in that town and made a remark on the town people (Uyugan is the smallest town in batan island, the main island in batanes). Usually, doctors who came first before Dr. Lariosa, according to the town people, does not showed any dedication and interest for people's health program. "They are usually seen at the clinic, doing not-so-related job", said by an employee who is a decade in service for the local government unit of that town, "but when Dr. Lariosa came to our town, he show dedication and interest for people's health, he even do field work just to make sure that  every people in town received attention to their medical needs", she added. He also do medical check-up for other town people of Batanes, others, even came from Itbayat and Sabtang that only shows how talented he is that even the Provincial Government sent medical practitioner to each municipality, people would find more comfort and trust to him.

Picture from pcij.org
Dr. R. Lariosa indeed show his best to attain his popularity in his chosen field. He spent 7 years in Batanes and decided to get married (at the age that I don't know :)) and has now a child name "Iraya" (a name came from an inactive volcano that is seen at basco airport) and an  incoming baby (his wife is still pregnant at that time). Sadly, after all those years that he spent in Batanes, he decided to continue his study in the United States with his family to pursue his dream on his interest in surgical operation.

Although the town people and local government officials spoke to him about his resignation, his decision is final and their is no other way he will revert from it.

It is sad when someone like Dr. Lariosa needs to seek opportunity in his career in overseas country like the United States. Is it the government shall be blame in this scenario such as these? For my own opinion, it is not, the government's responsibility is to implement the law and seek improvement for every people in its community. The only reason that I think why they need to seek opportunities abroad is to improve their skills and be more efficient to their profession and calling.

How far can you drive to support your family?

"Tricycle" from the word "tri" which means three and "cycle" for continuous flow which represents wheels.

In the Philippines, tricycle is a common transportation vehicle which can carry up to a dozen people in one ride, it depends on how your engine can cope to this. Every tricycle driver in the Philippines must be a TODA (Tricycle Operator and Drivers Association) member and some government permits to operate.

My father is a tricycle driver, everyday he ride passengers and transport them to their destination with an amount of fare for each succeeding kilometer. I adore my father for his dedication in his living for the benefit of our family. I, myself experienced how to be a tricycle operator. For other people, it's easy to for them to say that drivers only waits for passengers to aboard at their vehicle and transport them to their desired destination, it's easy to say but as what I've experienced, It is a stressful job. Everyday, you fight with pollution, stress from the environment, noise and smoke that came from other vehicles, irritated people, and even boredom. Dealing with it everyday isn't an easy task, you must have patience and perseverance to overcome such as this hazards that's why I even understand more why my father is always hot headed when he came home every night.

One day, he came home with a fever. We thought it is just a simple fever that will past only for a few days, but something happened that catch our attention. One midnight, I hear him chilling in cold covered with bedding. My mother then comfort him, after a few minutes, he stopped then I came again to my sleep. After few days, I suspected him to have a dengue fever which makes me nervous about the situation. I talked to my mother to take him for a check-up with the doctor and we found out that he had Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), to my comfort, I thank God for it is not severe. My mother came home and discussed to us about our financial situation and what are the consequences that can happen to pay for our father's bill at the hospital. At that moment, memories flashed back to me with regrets that we even don't have enough money to cope with situations like this. Questions came into my mind "how long can my father stand with this kind ofjob?", Although I can drive and substitute to him, I still think of my plans and goal for my life. I'm not rejecting such call but my time and opportunity can't be repeated, wasted opportunities is still wasted. This kind of thoughts play in my mind.

Owning a tricycle is a comfort for every family that they can at least survive for their daily needs, but until when? How long can you drive? 50's, 60's or 70's? I know some drivers who are at their 60's still drive a tricycle but not fit anymore to do such things as these. So can you think now of your plan and goals in life?, driving is also a profession but not subjected for promotion. Think of your future as I, learned in this story.

I Love Jesus

I was born and raised in a catholic tradition and culture, which I inherited from my family. I also became a "Sakristan" who assist the priest in mass ceremonies, I also do the novena that my grandmother thought me. I live my life in catholic tradition and culture for almost 15 years, I don't see anything wrong from it until someone from my relatives is been converted into a born again christian. He is my cousin's husband who worked in the middle east and came back in the Philippines to renew his life.

I was amazed how he is been changed from his ways, from being impatient and  hot headed to calm and soft heart-ed person. At first, I was afraid to talk to him because I knew he will ask me to join their religion (that's what I called it a long time ago) , but circumstances force me to do so, I went to see my Auntie at her home in marikina where they are also living at, My auntie was just arrived from Geneva that time. With me is my father, we talked with auntie for just a couple of hours and enjoy each others company. After we finish chatting, she decided to rest for a while in her bedroom, then he (my cousin's husband) attend to us. We are surprised when he shared his story of what had happened to him in Jeddah, He tells us how he is been converted to his new belief and religion. My father that time just say some few words and me just listening each and every detail he is saying. After that, he invites us for a bible study that night, well we couldn't say "no" at that time for we are cornered in two stones that time so we just accept his invitation and hoping that it'll take only a couple of minutes.

As we've finished dinner, he arranged the chairs and begin our study. Most of the time, I just listen and even I'm listening, I can't even understand the meaning of what he is talking about to us. What I knew that time is that he just explains to us how Jesus died in the cross and how He (Jesus) loves his people, well of course I know that. The night went by and we've finished the studying the bible, and then we went home. Before we leave, he ask us if we can came back on Sunday on that week to attend their Sunday Worship, My father just said "Yes". Sunday came and to my surprise, my father and my family with me went to his invitation. As we are listening to the Pastors Sermon, Me and my siblings can't help but to fell our heads because of too much dizziness (we woke-up too early). After that, we went to attend a Sunday school ministry, I've been separated and went to the Youth Ministry. I've came there feeling frustrated and depressed because of my shy-type attitude, but I feel something in me, maybe a little chilled of what was happening that time. We began to share each others stories, I've been amazed how I am related to their stories. One even tell how embarrassed he is when he is forced by his relative to attend the Sunday school service, that guy maybe upset because he even't got a chance to say something. After Sunday school, our teacher or youth leader talk to me about my personal life and how I see it in my perspective. Well, I've been too honest that time because that is the first time that someone ask me of my beliefs and interests. Went on, she then talk to me about how I am lucky that time because not every one is given a chance to accept and know Jesus.

From that day onward, until now, I still carry what my teacher in Sunday school thought me, It gave me the understanding and knowledge on how to handle everyday obstacles and issues of life. Truly I can say that I am very lucky of what I've been because of Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.
